Meet the America First Populist: The Nationalist Voters

Introducing the America First Populist

Leveraging the industry’s most advanced machine learning models, our 2020 Voter Landscape has surgically divided the U.S. Electorate into seven voter segments based on their online behavior. Simply put, we removed human bias from the equation and let the math do the talking.

At the far right, our Voter Landscape shows a giant voter persona that has become the lifeblood of the modern Republican Party: the America First Populist. Let’s take a deeper look at this segment.

Meet the America First Populist: The Nationalist Voters

Every president reshapes their own party to a certain degree, but the grassroots tend to grow in the same direction year over year. However, the Donald Trump years have given birth to a new era of Republican grassroots, one that has replaced the yellow Gadsden Flag with a red MAGA hat.

The 42 million online voters that have redefined Republican grassroots are found in our American First Populist segment – voters who opted for nationalism over libertarianism.

To better understand this shift, let’s rewind the clock: it’s 2010, just two years after Barack Obama and the Democrats ran the board on Republicans and took back Washington. The politics of the day give rise to the Tea Party, a fiery grassroots movement that resuscitates the Republican Party, rallying around constitutional ideals like small government and checks and balances. These voters allow the Republicans to reclaim the House in the midterms and start clawing back to power.

We’re a long way from 2010. The Trump era has created the America First Populist, a nationalist voter segment that is now responsible for keeping Trump and other Republican incumbents in power. In fact, our data shows that keeping Trump in power is their very first priority.

Take notes down-ballot campaigns – if you need to win this segment, hitch your wagon to Trump

The America First Populist is the largest Republican voter segment online. Quite different from the Tea Party, these voters favor a powerful, capable and robust federal government – as long as their Commander of Choice calls the shots. This explains why Trump’s strategy to play fast and loose – or at least threaten to – with executive authority is so energizing to the base. At the end of the day, getting the job done is what ultimately matters to these voters.

The America First Populists expect their leaders to do what’s necessary to secure the border with a well-funded wall, maintain a robust military, and make good on Social Security and Medicare. They’re more likely to be a Baby Boomer and they personally value tradition, security, and duty.
